Venice through the seasons...
The city of Venice offers a year-round season of events that are sure to intrigue and please you. These are some (but certainly not all!) of the events going on in Venice during the year...

JANUARY (gennaio)
Epifania/Befana
Held on Twelfth Night (January 5/6), it is the night during which Italian children hang out their stockings in hope of receiving a gift from la Befana, the witch who leaves gifts and treasures. The following day on 6th January, there is a regatta on the Grand Canal with rowers dressed as Befana in honor of her yearly visit.

FEBRUARY (febbraio)
Carnevale
Since the 12th century, the Carnival of Venice has become one of the world's most famous festivals.

MARCH (marzo)
Venice International Boat Show

APRIL (aprile)
Su e Zo per i Ponti
(meaning up and down the bridges) is an unusual non-competitive walk up and down the bridges and through different areas of Venice.
Festa del Bòcolo
Venice celebrates St Mark's Day (25 April) with the Festa del Bòcolo (rose bud festival), where men give the women in their lives roses.

MAY (maggio)
Festa della Sensa
The Sensa in Venice is the continuation of a thousand-year-old tradition, whereby the head of the city (the Doge) would annually renew the marriage between the city and the sea by throwing a ring into the waters of the lagoon.
Vogalonga
Vogalonga is a boat race set up in 1975 by a group of rowing revivalists and one of Venice's biggest events.

JULY (luglio)
Venezia Suona
As part of the European Fęte de la Musique day, the city of Venice organises free concerts in all of its squares.
Festa del Redentore
Religious ceremonies are held every year in the Redentore church on the Giudecca to commemorate the end of the plague of 1577.

AUGUST (agosto)
Venice Film Festival
Second only in importance to the Cannes festival

SEPTEMBER (settembre)
Regata Storica
On the first Sunday of September, everyday business comes to a halt and Venice stages the Historic Regatta.

OCTOBER (ottobre)
Venice Marathon

NOVEMBER (novembre)
St. Martin's Day
Venetian children run through the city, banging pots and pans with wooden spoons. It is traditional to reward the children by giving them a few coins.
Festa della Madonna della Salute
One of the most fascinating autumn festivities, celebrated in memory of a pestilence, which lasted for two years from 1630-31, and the subsequent vow by the Doge to obtain the intercession of the Virgin Mary.

DECEMBER (decembre)
Christmas and New Year's Eve
Market on Campo Santo Stefano, midnight mass at St. Mark's Basilica and ringing in the new year on Piazza San Marco...
